Moroccan Andalusian music (known as Al-Ala) is a refined, centuries-old classical tradition that reflects the city's status as a major cultural and political capital. Rabat style is celebrated for its fluidity and balanced elegance. It maintains a strict adherence to the classical nuba system — suites composed of vocal and instrumental movements that correspond to specific times of day. Orchestras typically feature the oud (lute), violin (often held vertically on the knee), rebab (two-stringed fiddle), qanun (zither), and percussion like the darbouka and tar (tambourine).
